Newark, NJ – March, 2008- General Chairman Kevin P. Frey and the
Newark Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee are proud to announce the selection
of  Grand Marshal Don Gilmartin and Deputy Grand Marshal Virginia C. Treacy to
lead the 73rd Anniversary Parade on Friday, March 14, 2008.  The Parade will
begin promptly at 2:00 pm, starting from the New Prudential Center on Mulberry
Street, Newark.   
  
          Donald Gilmartin, who traces his roots to County
Roscommon, served in the U.S. Navy from October 1968 to September 1970. He has
been a member of the Newark Fire Department for 34 years and is currently
assigned to Ladder 4 and the Fireboat, Marine 1. Gilmartin is a founding member
and Past President of the Essex County Police and Fire Emerald Society, as well
as a founding member of the Newark Firefighters Pipe Band.  Gilmartin is Past
President of the New Jersey Grand Council of Emerald Societies and a Past
Chairman of the Police Memorial March for the National Council of Law
Enforcement Emerald Societies held during Police Week in Washington D.C. He
resides in Somerset , NJ with his wife Millie and their four children: Colleen,
Caitlin, Laurenn Anne and Christopher. 
  
          Deputy Grand Marshal Virginia Treacy is Executive
Director of JNESO District Council 1 of the International Union of Operating
Engineers, and has been a registered nurse for 35 years.  She traces her Irish
roots to County Cork and County Down. Treacy conducted her first organizing
campaign in 1977, and in 1985, after working as Union Director for the New
Jersey State Nurses Association, she led 2,300 nurses to start an independent
professional health care union, JNESO.  JNESO affiliated with the IUOE in 1992,
and the union boasts more than 5,000 registered nurses and other health care
providers.  
           
          Virginia has been honored with several awards by her
union as well as her Labor and Nursing peers and colleagues. Most recently, she
was a committee member of New Jersey’s Commission on Rationalizing Healthcare
Resources and is a leader of “RNs Working Together” an AFL-CIO National Alliance
of 12 health care unions.  Virginia is married to Brian and they have two
daughters, Barbara and Kathleen. The family makes time to visit Ireland
annually, enjoying the many golf courses there. 
  
          Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy will serve as the
Honorary Chairman of the 2008 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  McCarthy began his
career as a New York City Police Officer in 1981 and over the next 17 years,
commanded the 20th, 33rd, and 70th precincts. 
He has served as Newark Police Director since 2006.  McCarthy, married for 21
years to his wife Gina, has two daughters, Kyla and Kimberly, and traces his
Irish Roots to County Longford. 
  
          The 2008 Newark St. Patrick’s Day Parade is dedicated
to The Police and Fire Emerald Society of Essex County.  The Emerald Society of
Essex County New Jersey was established its 1958, in an effort to form a
fraternal organization that would benefit and work to assist any Police Officer
or Firefighter in time of need.  In 1981, The Emerald Society Pipe Band was
formed and since then has performed throughout the World. The band holds as its
goal that no fallen Police Officer or Firefighter be laid to rest without the
honor of Pipes and Drums. 
  
          The new Parade route will start at the Prudential
Center and proceed north on Mulberry Street, past the New Jersey Performing Arts
Center on Center Street, and conclude at Washington Park. There will be
Reviewing Stands located at Mulberry and Clinton Streets as well as Central
Avenue and Washington Street.
