Hoboken Saint Patrick's Day Parade

Hoboken, NJ (February 6, 2006) – The Hoboken St. Patrick’s Parade Committee announced today that Charles “Buddy” Matthews, a Hoboken High School teacher and baseball coach, has been named their 2006 Grand Marshall.  The Hoboken St. Patrick’s Parade will take place Saturday, March 4th at 1:00 PM on Washington Street.  A list of all Saint Patrick’s Day Parades in New Jersey (NJ)

“We are extremely honored to have Buddy Matthews as this year’s Grand Marshall.  As a teacher at Hoboken High School for 29 years and the school’s baseball coach for 20 years, Buddy’s decades of service to the youth of this community have been an inspiration to us all,” said John Cunning, Co-Chair of this year’s parade.

"I'm honored to have been chosen as Grand Marshal for this year's Hoboken St. Patrick's Parade.  I've spent many years teaching and coaching the kids at Hoboken High and I'm thrilled that I'll be celebrating my Irish heritage in such a special way in such a special community on March 4th.  I'm particularly excited that my family, friends and students will be a part of this celebration," said Charles "Buddy" Matthews, Grand Marshal of the 2006 Hoboken St. Patrick's Parade.

“We are extremely honored to have Buddy Matthews as this year’s Grand Marshal.  As a teacher at Hoboken High School for 29 years and the school’s baseball coach for 20 years, Buddy’s decades of service to the youth of this community have been an inspiration to us all,” said John Cunning, Co-Chair of this year’s parade.

“The committee looks forward to honoring our Grand Marshal and our Irishman and Irishwoman of the Year at our upcoming Irish Party.  These individuals represent all of the great things about the Irish-American community in Hoboken.  They are all energetic, hard-working individuals whose tireless support of local charities, schools and civic organizations is remarkable.  We hope that many people from our community will turn out to honor these fine people at our Irish Party to be held on Sunday, February 19th from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Our Lady of Grace School Auditorium on Willow at Fifth Street,” said Bill Noonan, Co-Chair of the parade.

Matthews’ tenure as Hoboken High’s baseball coach includes leading teams to four county, three state and seven conference championships.  Additionally, Matthews has been the school’s basketball coach for four years and led the school to both its first conference and county basketball championships in the school’s history.  A member of both the Hoboken High School and St. Peters College sports halls of fame, Matthews has also enjoyed honors as a past Man of the Year for the local chapter of the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation and Irishman of the Year for the Hoboken Elks Lodge.  He and his wife, Janice Stolte, live locally and have a daughter, Trace Poggioli.

Additionally, the committee announced that Rosie O’Shea Grogan, a resident of Hoboken since 1948 and a former Hoboken Post Office Employee for 35 years, has been named Irishwoman of the Year.  Grogan was a member of the last class to graduate from A. J. Demarest High School in 1962 and is the proud mother of retired Port Authority police officer Tommy Grogan.  Similarly, Joseph T. Kennedy, was named Irishman of the Year.   Kennedy, presently Assistant Curator of the Hoboken Fire Department Museum, served as a Hoboken firefighter for 31 years, retiring in 1993.  He is Korean War Veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.  The oldest of six children, Kennedy has a daughter, Kathleen Ellen.

“The committee looks forward to honoring our Grand Marshall and our Irishman and Irishwoman of the Year at our upcoming Irish Party.

The Hoboken Irish Party will feature live music, dancing, a hot corned beef dinner and an open bar.  Tickets for the party are $50 each and can be purchased in advance at Mulligan’s, The Nag’s Head Pub, McBride’s, and The Quiet Woman, all in Hoboken, or email the parade committee at [email protected] or [email protected].

The Hoboken St. Patrick’s Parade Committee has also made arrangements for a special St. Patrick’s Mass at Our Lady of Grace Church to take place at 5:00 PM on February 25th.
