A great place to watch the parade!
Come see the
march of bagpipe and high school bands, local police and fire department
units, floats and many more organizations through the center of
Union.
Thanks to the efforts of the Union County St. Patrick’s
Day Parade Committee and some 17 organizations working behind the scenes
year-round, the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade has grown from drawing
10,000 spectators during its inaugural run in 1997 to more than 40,000
on-lookers last year. This 2007 Parade is dedicated to
New Jersey’s firefighters to honor them
for their commitment and extraordinary efforts in service to the community.
In keeping with a parade tradition, officials from
Shannon,
Ireland will be
marching for the eleventh straight year. As guests of the Union County
Emerald Society, Shannon Mayor Tony McMahon, his wife
Carmel and Shannon Town Clerk Tomas
MacCornaic will join in the
Union
County celebration of St.
Patrick.
A Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in
Elizabeth at
9 a.m. to begin the day followed by
a welcoming reception in the church hall.
The family-friendly festivities kick off at
12 noon at the reviewing stand
located at the corner of Morris and Stuyvesant Avenues in
Union
Center with a warm Irish welcome
from parade officials, traditional Irish music and Irish step-dancing. The
one-mile parade will begin at
1 p.m. at
Commerce Street and
Morris Avenue, proceeding east on
Morris to
Union
Center and south onto
Stuyvesant Avenue, ending at
Roosevelt Avenue.
This year, the parade will
also feature a Kid Zone presented by the Union County Business District.
The Kid Zone will feature inflatable rides, walk-around entertainers and
activities for the whole family. Located on Stuyvesant and Morris Avenues,
this new area of the festivities brings additional amusement for young
visitors, as well as the young-at-heart.
The organizations that are represented on the parade
committee are based throughout
Union, Essex and Middlesex counties and include The
John Cryan Association, Thornsticks, The Irish-American Society of the
Township of
Union, the Friendly Sons of St.
Patrick, the Joseph Nugent Association, the Ancient Order of Hibernians in
Elizabeth, the Union County Emerald Society and the Union County
Irish-American Association. The parade also receives major support from such
sponsors as Union Center National Bank and Peerless Beverage.

History and Information! A great place to watch the parade!
Registration for
the Guinness Fun Run will start at 10:30 a.m. at the Blackthorn. There is a
$25 registration fee that includes admission into the “Finnegan’s Wake” party,
a t-shirt and complimentary beverages. The race will commence at 1:30 p.m.
“Finnegan’s Wake”
will feature continuous live Irish-American entertainment by “The Mike Byrne
Band” from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $20.00 per person which includes hot
dogs, beer, wine and soda. For information please call Kathy Rotando at

All proceeds from
the events benefit the 2006 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The 10th

Mass for 2006 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal

The
Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will host their annual
“Celebrity Bartender” fundraiser on January 29, 2006 from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at
the Kenilworth Veterans Center, 33 South 21st Street, Kenilworth,
NJ. Entertainment will include the Irish-American Pub Rock sound of Sullivan’s
Jack and pipe bands. Tickets cost $5.00 each and include coffee, tea, cake and
hot dogs.
The “Celebrity Bartender” party
will benefit the 2006 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade which steps off at 1
p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2006, on Morris Ave in Union, NJ. For

The
Mayor of Shannon, Ireland Joins the March on Morris Avenue
UNION--The 10th Annual Union County
St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 1:00 p.m.

marchers and spectators gather to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland.
The 2006 Grand Marshal, Kathleen
McGinnis-DiChiara of Summit, will lead the march of bagpipe and high school
bands, local police and fire department units, floats and many more
organizations through the center of Union.
Thanks to the efforts of the Union
County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and some 17 organizations working
behind the scenes year-round, the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade has
grown from drawing 10,000 spectators during its inaugural run in 1997 to an
anticipated turn-out of more than 40,000 on-lookers this year. This 2006
Parade is dedicated to all the medical professionals of Union County to
honor them for their commitment and extraordinary efforts in service to the
community.
In keeping with a parade tradition,
officials from Shannon, Ireland will also be marching for the tenth straight
year. As guests of the Union County Emerald Society, Shannon Mayor Tony
Mulchay and Shannon Town Clerk Tomas MacCornaic will join in the Union
County celebration of St. Patrick.
The Union County Emerald Society
nominated McGinnis-DiChiara for Grand Marshal and she was elected
unanimously by representatives of the parade committee member organizations
and parade officers. She is known throughout New Jersey and beyond for her
30 years of work helping the needy as President and Chief Executive Officer
of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey located in Hillside.
The Grand Marshal traces her Irish
roots back through three grandparents to Counties Cork, Limerick and
Waterford. A recipient of a multitude of awards and honors, Kathleen has
been recognized by three U.S. presidents, three governors and Pope John Paul
II for her efforts in collecting and distributing food to those in need.
“Kathleen displays all the qualities
of a selfless and dedicated Irish Catholic who absolutely conveys the true
significance of our culture, heritage and honor to the patron saint of
Ireland,” said Peter Tierney, the 2006 Parade General Chairman.
According to Parade Adjutant Paul
Butterly, who also coordinates parade logistics with the Township of Union,
the 2006 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade will feature high school
marching bands from the Township of Union and City of Elizabeth, more than
20 bagpipe bands including the Union County Police & Fire Pipes & Drums and
the St. Columcille United Gaelic Pipe Band, Fourth Degree color guards from
the Knights of Columbus, non-profit units, local police and fire departments
and floats provided by Union Center National Bank, the Center for Hope
Hospice and the Garden State Ceili Club. The Union Center National Bank been
the primary corporate sponsor since the parade’s inception.

Annual Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.
McGinnis-DiChiara is known throughout
the state and beyond for her 30 years of work helping the needy as President
and Chief Executive Officer of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey located
in Hillside.
“Kathleen displays all the qualities of

McGinnis-DiChiara, a Summit resident for
more than 30 years, traces her Irish roots back through three grandparents to
Counties Cork, Limerick and Waterford.
“My parents would be thrilled,” said
McGinnis-DiChiara after learning she was named Grand Marshal, noting she grew
up in a home very aware of her Irish heritage.
“My mother taught us to bless ourselves
in Irish Gaelic.”
A hands-on manager at the FoodBank,
McGinnis-DiChiara can be seen on the loading dock with her sleeves rolled up
one minute and meeting with business executives and bankers the next in order
to continue a constant flow of food to the needy.
The recipient of a multitude of awards
and honors, McGinnis-DiChiara has been recognized by three U.S. presidents,
three governors and Pope John Paul II for her efforts in collecting and
disturbing food to those in need. Also, she counts New Jersey rocker Bruce
Springsteen as a friend and supporter for 20 years.
The Union County Emerald Society
nominated McGinnis-DiChiara for Grand Marshal and she was elected unanimously
by representatives of the 17 parade committee member organizations and parade
officers.
“I think this is fantastic,” McGinnis-DiChiara
said. “I am honored and humbled.”
Between the four trips she has made to
Ireland, McGinnis-DiChiara enjoys keeping up with Irish news and events on
both sides of the Atlantic. She hopes to travel to Eire again soon where every
trip includes visiting cousins in Shannongolden, Co. Limerick.
The 2006 Union County St. Patrick’s Day
Parade will be a family day for McGinnis-DiChiara as well as a celebration of
her Irish heritage. She is looking forward to sharing the day with her husband
Anthony, her children Erin and Anthony and grandchildren Alexandra and
Anthony. Her brother Dr. James McGinnis and his wife Tina from Oklahoma City
and her sister, Sr. Sheila McGinnis from Philadelphia, will also be joining
her for the march down Morris Avenue.
“We enthusiastically look forward to
parade day when Kathleen will lead us in our yearly tribute to St. Patrick,”
said General Chairman Tierney. Kathleen McGinnis-DiChiara will be installed as
the Grand Marshal of the 2006 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade during an
Investiture Mass at St. Teresa of Avila Church located at 306 Morris Avenue,
Summit on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. All are invited to attend
the Mass and Investiture. The formal installation will be conducted by Peg
Cullen formerly of Mountainside, the 2005 Grand Marshal.
